The Alibi
How far would you go to save
what you love?
He’s handsome, charming, and the city’s beloved Lord Mayor. He’s also a cheating husband. But is he a killer?
When a surfer discovers the gruesome remains of council staffer Lauren Ellis in sand dunes just metres from Lord Mayor Andrew Ashley’s beachside home, rumours of his close relationship with the victim quickly begin to circulate.
Andrew’s secret affair with local newspaper reporter Elle Nolan is proof he can be an unfaithful husband – but is he also guilty of murder?
As the search for answers continues, Andrew refuses to tell police where he was the night of Lauren’s death.
When Andrew reaches out to Elle from police lock-up begging her to provide an alibi for the night in question, she quickly realises that instead of just reporting the story, she’s about to become irrevocably entangled in it.
What a fun and twisty thriller! I have enjoyed other books of Taylor’s in the past, as she is exceptional at creating crazy convoluted plots, but writing in her native Australian voice made this the strongest of the ones I have read

About The Alibi
The Alibi is a murderous love letter to my hometown of Newcastle, NSW, which explores the age-old battle of knowing when to hold on and when to let go of the things we love the most—with murder, betrayal, and a dead body thrown in of course.
The idea for The Alibi came about after my former partner was the last person to see (still) missing man Steven Fenwick on Stockton Beach and inevitably became a part of the investigation. While The Alibi is not about that specific case, it does begin with a body found on Stockton Beach and asks the question - what would you do if the person you love was accused of murder and asked you to be their alibi if they were the last person to see the victim alive and you don't know where they were the night in question.
Trav assisting SES crews at the entrance to Stockton Beach.
Newcastle readers will have the chance to meet Taylor at the upcoming Newcastle Writers Festival, where she will be In Conversation with Carol Duncan at The Press Book House on Saturday, 5 April at 11.30am.

Book One - The Secrets We Keep
A completely gripping, twist-packed psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, K.L Slater, and Lisa Jewell.
“Beautifully written with themes of love, abuse, and betrayal, The Secrets We Keep is heart-wrenching, heroic, and unexpected."
- Kristi Elizabeth, Manhattan Book Review
One woman who has lost everything. Another with everything to lose.
SOPHIE
Sophie Miller had it all. A loving husband and adorable six-year-old son. They were a perfect family. Until a drunk driver lost control and James and Josh were killed on their way to a soccer game. Five years later, and a mother without a child, she remains a shadow of herself, barely leaving the house and relying on anti-anxiety pills just to get through the day. Working from home as a book editor is safe – or so she thinks, until a manuscript comes across her desk that threatens to turn her world upside down.
Because Sophie has a secret. A child that many years ago she helped to conceive.
The story triggers in her a sudden longing to know. Would the child share Josh’s chestnut hair? The same gold and brown flecks of his eyes. She wouldn’t interfere. She would watch from a distance. Just to know. Could she see the features of her little boy reflected one last time?
It wouldn’t hurt just to look. Would it?
MADELYN-MAY
Madelyn-May Marozzi has it all. To her Love, Mommy online community she is the perfect mother. She has a successful husband, perfect twins, and an idyllic life.
What they don’t know is that Madelyn-May is not who she says she is.
Certain everyone who knows the truth about her past is long gone, Madelyn-May’s world is turned upside down when an anonymous email drops into her inbox threatening to expose a horrific crime she committed as a teenager.
But should she take the threat seriously? Everyone involved is already dead. Aren’t they?
Nikki Lee Taylor crafts an intense, complex, and addictive novel with richly drawn and beautifully flawed characters in this powerful and sometimes heart-breaking book about family, motherhood, and the dark secrets we keep.
This is a great read for people who enjoyed Girl on the Train, Sharp Objects, and Gone Girl. If you like suspense and thrillers with flawed characters, intriguing female protagonists, and twists you will never see coming, you will enjoy this book.
Find out why readers are calling The Secrets We Keep, an 'intensive, addictive, jaw-dropping read to keep you on the edge of your seat'.
Book Two - The Truth We Tell
This book is very exciting and keeps you on your toes the entire time. One of the best books I’ve read in a very long time
Amazon Reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Can you ever really outrun the past? Find out in the highly anticipated sequel to The Secrets We Keep.
Accused of murder and on the run, would you choose to save yourself or the life of a little girl you’ve never met?
Five years after being kidnapped and almost killed in a car crash, seventeen-year-old Harlow just wants to live a normal life. But when a controversial video of a drunken night out goes viral, she quickly finds herself exposed to the vicious attacks of online trolls. What they don’t know is that their cowardly online abuse is about to trigger a chain of events that will not only put Harlow’s life in danger but will force her to choose between saving herself and the life of a little girl she’s never met.
In this intense, edge-of-your-seat thriller, Taylor takes readers on yet another emotional roller coaster as The Secrets We Keep and the fate of Harlow, Sophie, Bastian, and Madelyn-May reaches an unflinching and unforgettable conclusion in The Truth We Tell.
Once again, the book explores the complex and intricate relationships we have with others and ourselves, as Taylor crafts an intense and compelling narrative around the bonds of family and how truth has the power to set us free.
