Novocastrian and international best-selling author Nikki Lee Taylor has been named winner of the Sisters in Crime Scarlet Stiletto Award, one of Australia’s most celebrated crime-writing prizes.
The award was presented by crime-writing royalty, author Candice Fox at a gala ceremony in Melbourne on Saturday night, 23 November. Previous winners of the Scarlet Stiletto Award include literary luminaries Tara Moss, Cate Kennedy, and Annie Hauxwell.
“When I entered, my goal was just to be short-listed,” Taylor said.
“To actually win is something I could never have imagined.”
Taylor’s winning entry, Lilly Pilly Don’t Be Silly, is a chilling tale narrated by a teenage protagonist, exploring themes of abuse and bullying. Known for her deeply empathetic and character-driven narratives, Taylor’s work often highlights the strength and resilience of women and girls who have faced profound trauma.
“I wanted to write something that felt unexpected but was still relatable and authentic,” she said.
“The expectation of a crime story is usually that a murder or incident occurs to a third party, but it’s important to also consider the impact of crimes we commit against ourselves, especially as women, and often without even realising it.”
The award coincides with the release of Taylor’s latest title, The Alibi, a gripping mystery thriller set in Newcastle.
“It’s incredibly special to share this moment alongside the release of The Alibi,” Taylor said.
“The Alibi is a murderous love letter to my hometown, that explores the age-old battle of knowing when to hold on and when to let go of the things we love the most—with murder, betrayal, and a dead body thrown in of course.”
Newcastle readers will have the chance to meet Taylor at the upcoming Newcastle Writers Festival, where she will be In Conversation with Carol Duncan at The Press Book House on Saturday, 5 April at 11.30am.
